Golden Week is just around the corner, and we are sure that some of you 
are planning to take trips during this holiday period. Golden Week is 
indeed a good time to travel within Japan.  Please enjoy your holidays.

<Vocabulary related to holidays and excursions>

-"Yasumi"   : breaks
-"Yasumi o toru"  :to take a break
Example: "Raishuu no Suiyoobi, o-yasumi o itadakitaindesu gac"
:I would like to take a day off on Wednesday next week.

-"Kyuuka"   :vacations
-"Kyuuka o toru"  :to take a vacation
Example: "Senshuu wa kyuuka o totte onsen ni itte kimashita."
:I took a vacation and went to a hot spring last week.

-"Yasumu"   :to take a rest
Example: "Kaze de mikka mo yasunde shimaimashita."
:I had to take three days off because of a cold.

-"Renkyuu"  :consecutive days of holiday, long holiday
- "XX-renkyuu"   :XX-day holiday  
("San-renkyuu" :three-day holiday / "Yon-renkyuu" :four-day holiday)
-"Shukujitsu / saijitsu"   :national holidays
-"Furikae kyuujitsu"     :substitution holidays
-"Yuukyuu kyuuka / yuukyuu"  :paid holidays
-"Daikyuu"  :compensatory holidays

-"Konzatsu suru"  :to become crowded
-"Komu"    :to become crowded
-"Suku"    : to become less crowded
Example: "Kyuujitsu no Shibuya wa totemo konzatsu shite imasu."
:Shibuya becomes very crowded on holidays.

-"Juutai suru"  :to create a traffic jam
Example: "Renkyuu ni naruto, koosokudooro wa itsumo juutai shimasu."
:Motorists always crowd the highways and create traffic jams during 
consecutive holiday.

-"Manseki"    :all seats have been taken
-"Manshitsu"  :all rooms are occupied
Examples: "Gooruden wuiiku-chuu, Okinawa no hoteru wa dokomo manshitsu desu."
:You cannot find a hotel room anywhere in Okinawa during Golden Week.
-"Man-in"     : no vacancy
Examples: "Man-in densha de tsuukin suru no wa hontoo ni tsukaremasu."
:Commuting to work on a crowded train is really exhausting.

-"Ryokoo-gaisha"   :travel agencies
-"Shukuhaku"     :lodging
-"Kippu"          :tickets
-"Shitei-seki"      :reserved seats
-"Jiyuu-seki"      :unreserved seats
-"Guriinsha"      :first-class coaches
-"Oofuku"         :round trip
-"Katamichi"      :one way
-"Yoyaku suru"    :to make a reservation
Example: "Shinai-kankoo no opushonaru-tsuaa o yoyaku shimashita."
:I made a reservation to take a tour of the city.

-"Tesuuryoo"      :commissions
-"Henkoo suru"    :to change
Example: "Sumimasen ga, shukuhakubi no henkoo o onegai shimasu."
:Sorry for the inconvenience, but can I change the days of my stay at your 
hotel?

-"Kyanseru suru"   :to cancel reservations
-"Kyanseru-ryoo"   :cancellation charges
Example: "Zenjitsu ni kyanseru suruto, kyanseru-ryoo ga gojuppaasento 
kakarimasu."
:You must pay 50 percent of total charges if you cancel your reservation 
with less than 24 hours' notice.
-"Kyanseru-machi"  :waiting for a cancellation to result in a vacancy
Example: (A) "Pari iki no bin wa manseki desu."  
(B) "Kyanseru-machi dekimasuka."
: (A) Flights to Paris are fully booked.
: (B) Can you put me on the waiting list in the event of cancellation?

-"Jizen-ni / maemotte" <adverbs>   :in advance
Example: "Hoteru wa maemotte yoyaku shita hoo ga ii to omoimasu."
:I think it is a good idea for you to reserve your hotel rooms in advance. 

-"Keikaku suru / keikaku o tateru"   :to plan
Example: "Futsuka-me wa hakubutsukan ni iku keikaku o tatemashita."
:I plan to visit a museum on the second day of my holiday.
-"Kankoo suru"    :to sightsee
-"Nonbiri suru"    :to stretch out and relax
Example: "Renkyuu-chuu wa uchi de nonbiri shite imashita."
:I stretched out and relaxed at home during the holiday.
-"Yukkuri suru"  :to make oneself at home and to do things at a leisurely pace
Example: "Hisashiburi ni jikka ni kaeru node yukkuri shite kitai to omoimasu."
:It's been some time since I last visited my parents. I'm planning to make 
myself at home with them and to enjoy a leisurely pace for a while.
-"Tanoshimu"    :to have fun

-"Ainiku" <adverb>   :unfortunately
Example: "Pikunikku ni iku yotei datta noni, ainiku ame ga futte kita."
:I had planned to go on a picnic, but unfortunately for me, it began to rain.
-"Saiwai" <adverb>   :fortunately
Example: "Basu ni nori-okureta ga, saiwai suguni takushii ga tsukamatta 
node okurezu ni sunda."
:I missed the bus, but fortunately, I found a taxi immediately and got here 
on time.
