We hope you are not getting sick during these cold winter days. 
This year, Influenza is spreading rapidly in Japan.  Many schools in Japan 
have closed for a few days because of mass outbreaks of the flu. 
Have you had your flu shot? 
This month we would like to introduce vocabulary relating to sickness, 
especially cold/flu symptoms, but we hope you do not have to use these 
words.  Please take care and stay warm! 
 
 
*VOCABULARY RELATED TO COLD/FLU SYMPTOMS 
 
 
--"kaze o hiku": catch a cold 
--"infuruenza ni kakaru": have the flu; suffer from the flu 
--"hatsunetsu / netsu": fever 
--"netsu ga aru": have a fever 
--"zutsuu":headache 
--"atama ga itai": have a headache 
--"fukutsuu": stomachache 
--"onaka ga itai": have a stomachache 
--"seki ga deru": have a cough 
--"hanamizu ga deru": have a runny nose 
--"hana ga tsumatteiru": have a stuffy nose 
--"kushami o suru": sneeze 
--"geri o shiteiru / onaka o kowashite iru": have diarrhea 
--"memai ga suru": get dizzy 
--"hakike ga suru": feel nauseous 
--"haku": vomit 
--"samuke ga suru": feel chills 
--"kibun ga warui": feel sick 
--"shokuyoku ga nai": have no appetite 
 
*VOCABULARY USED AT A HOSPITAL 
 
--"(kenkoo) hokenshoo": health insurance card 
      e.g. "hokenshoo o wasurete shimatta node, kondo motte kimasu" 
             I have forgotten to bring my insurance card, so I will bring 
 it next time. 
--"uketsuke": reception 
--"machiaishitsu": waiting room 
--"yakkyoku": pharmacy 
--"arerugii": allergy 
--"arerugii ga aru": be allergic to 
      e.g."watashi wa penishirin arerugii ga arimasu" 
            I am allergic to Penicillin. 
--"tenteki":intravenous drip 
--"chuusha": injection 
--"taionkee": thermometer 
--"isha": doctoer *but "sensee" when addressing him/her 
--"kangoshi": nurse 
--"nomi gusuri": oral medicine 
--"nuri gusuri": medicinal ointment/cream 
--"hari gusuri": medicinal patch 
 
*VOCABULARY RELATED TO MEDICINE 
 
 
--"shohoosen": prescription 
      e.g. "shohoosen o motte yakkyoku ni itte kudasai" 
             Please take the prescription to go to the pharmacy 
--"kusuri o nomu / hukuyoo suru": take medicine 
      e.g. "kono kusuri wa shokugo ni 2-joo hukuyoo shite kudasai" 
             Please take two tablets of this medicine after a meal 
--"shokuzen": before a meal 
--"shokkan": between meals 
--"shokugo": after a meal 
--"koosee busshitsu": antibiotics 
--"kanpoo yaku": Chinese herbal medicine 
--"ugai o suru": gargle 
 
 
*ONOMATOPOEIC EXPRESSION USED WITH COLD/FLU 
 
 
"zokuzoku" 
      e.g. "karada ga zokukzoku shite samuke ga suru" 
             I feel a chill and shiver with cold 
"muka muka" 
      e.g. "I ga mukamuka shite hakike ga suru" 
            I am sick to my stomach and feel nauseous 
"zuruzuru" 
      e.g. "hanamizu ga zuruzuru dete tomaranai" 
            I can't stop my runny nose. 
"zukizuki" 
      e.g. "atama ga zukizuki suru" 
             I have a piercing headache. 
  "hurahura" 
      e.g. "netsu no see de hurahura suru" 
            I feel light-headed/a little dizzy because of the fever. 
"goho goho": sound of cough 
"hakkushon": sound of sneeze
