CJPT(Communicative Business Japanese Proficiency Test)
Have you ever wanted to know how your Japanese ability compares with other people's? The Japanese Proficiency Test is well known throughout Japan. However, that test strongly emphasizes grammar and reading comprehension. Moreover, because it was originally intended for foreigners wishing to enter a Japanese university, the Japanese Proficiency Test includes many vocabulary items that the average businessperson is unlikely to use. For this and other reasons, the Japanese Proficiency Test is not a good measure of the communication ability required by businesspeople.

An overview of the test is given below.
1. Purpose of the Test
The CJPT is designed to objectively measure and evaluate one's proficiency in using the Japanese language for communication in a diverse range of situations. It is targeted at non-native speakers engaged primarily in business.
2. Features of the Test

(1) The test gives priority to measuring and evaluating one's ability to understand and communicate using the forms of Japanese encountered in business situations, rather than simply measuring one's knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.
(2) The test consists of three parts:

1) Listening test to measure and evaluate knowledge of Japanese grammar
2) Reading test to measure and evaluate comprehension of written Japanese including kana and kanji
3) Oral communication test to measure and evaluate communication skills
3. Structure of the Test

The Listening Comprehension Test involves answering questions based on listening. This is a "multiple choice" test with the questions and possible answers illustrated using pictures. Accordingly, no knowledge of kana or kanji is necessary.

(2) The Reading Comprehension Test involves answering questions based on reading sentences. This is also a "multiple choice" test.
(3) The Communication Test measures and evaluates one's command of oral Japanese communication skills from a comprehensive range of perspectives. It does not involve a written examination. Instructors trained in interviewing skills conduct conversation and role-playing tests, which are recorded. The recorded tests are then assessed by at least two other instructors.
4. Evaluation Criteria
You will receive an assessment based on your score for each part of the test, so regular examinations will enable you to measure your progress. The Communication Test evaluates 32 items related to communication ability, and you can find out your score for each item.
5. Duration

The test lasts about 90 minutes, including the time required for explanation of the procedure.
(1) Listening Comprehension Test: 30 minutes
(2) Reading Comprehension Test: 20 minutes
